Intensive Blitz Week! 7 Days of Intense Exercise Complete!

Last week, 5 of my regular class goers embarked on an intensive exercise week, every day for 7 days…  Ouch!

The week was designed to leave no muscle untouched and no energy system unused with 5 days of classes at 75 minutes and 2 active recovery days of fun aerobics and active stretching to make sure those muscles didn’t seize up!

Each class had a theme and varied from Tabata, to Bum specific, Core blasts to Boot camp and Boxing. Tyres were thrown and flipped, the dice of deliverance made an appearance we even played a game of cards…  with a catch of course.  Every single person improved on their fitness tests which were taken a few days before the course began and redone on the final day before the final class.  We endured heat and braved the horse flies!

What is Tabata?

That’s easy!  Tabata is an amazing way to exercise developed by Professor Izumi Tabata (hence the name 🙂  Professor Tabata undertook some studies with Olympic speed skaters to prove that the fitness gains provided by Tabata training equaled if not surpassed those of the standard long endurance type of training!

Tabata is a form of High Intensity Interval Training which means that you exercise as hard as you can for 20 seconds and then rest for 10 seconds.  This is repeated 8 times over with the idea that you try just as hard each time you reach a 20 second interval.

High Intensity Interval Training has been shown to significantly raise your V02 Max and also your resting metabolic rate which means that you can effectively burn fat for an extra 24 – 48 hours after your HIIT work out!

Tabata has also been proven to not only increase your aerobic capacity but also your anaerobic too.  What’s not to love?

The best part of Tabata is YOU work as hard as YOU can so it doesn’t matter what the person next to you is doing, as long as you know you are pushing it!
